Annual forages are an important feed resource for cattle producers in western Nebraska. On Thursday, September 10, at 9 a.m., at the field corner located at the intersection of County Road 115 and County Road 8 south of Sidney, Tyson Narjes will host a tour demonstrating how he is utilizing annual forages as part of his grazing program during the drought. This event is hosted in partnership between the Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition and Nebraska Extension.

The tour will focus on how annual forages can be used as a grazing resource within a cropping system to complement perennial pasture and crop residue. Attendees will have the opportunity to observe grazing in progress and hear firsthand how the Narjes family incorporates annual forages. Tyson will share his experiences, what has worked, what hasn’t, and the opportunities he is considering moving forward.

Nebraska Extension Educator Aaron Berger will discuss key considerations when grazing annual forages during a drought, including the risks associated with different crops such as nitrate and prussic acid poisoning. He will also address opportunities to improve harvest efficiency through windrow grazing, strip grazing, and virtual fencing.

Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition staff member Jack Arterburn will outline cost‑share grant opportunities available to help producers try annual forages on their own operations.
